Having spent several years in tech support using an organization that sells manual transmissions, I’ve discussed with many customers who have made clutch setup mistakes that cost them money, time and frustration. These suggestions are based on my encounter in what a newcomer which is installing a brand new competition clutchoften overlooks. This post ISN’T a replacement for a good auto repair guide which is particular to the vehicle you’re working on! Follow the service manual rather if these suggestions contradict the data in your service manual.
Hint # 1: Lubrication in each of the appropriate spots (and not one of the wrong spots!) – Put a light coating of grease on the aviator point of the input shaft and on the collar the discharge bearing slides on wipe an extremely light coating of oil on the input shaft splines to avoid rust. Take care to NOT get any grease on the clutch disk, the flywheel, or the pressure plate.
Hint # 2: Have the flywheel resurfaced, however good it seems. It only costs several dollars, and the threat of being forced to take out the transmission again as a result of competition clutch that is chattering isn’t worth the money you could save.
Hint # 3: Replace the pilot bearing or bushing. Should you not have a unique pilot bearing puller tool, some service manuals instruct you to remove the old bearing by using a wooden dowel or old input shaft to drive outside the old one and packaging the cavity behind the bearing with grease? I’ve discovered that with equivalent or better results and manner you are able to use play dough, silly putty, or even some old bread, instead of grease less wreck!
